Single-Tone Control

This page is an introduction to using a single tone to control something.

If you want to control more than one thing using tones, you probably want DTMF/Touch-Tone Control

Introduction

Sometimes you just want to control one thing using a sound. Perhaps one channel of a stereo sound track contains spooky music, and the other channel contains a "beep" noise that means "pop up the skeleton now!"

In situations like this, you don't need to go to the expense of DTMF/Touch-Tone Control.

You want a single sound to trigger a single effect.

Detecting A Tone

If you aren't picky about the triggering sound, all you need is a circuit that will react to anything. Here's the one that Scary Terry uses:

For more precision, you might want to make sure that the circuit reacts only to sounds of a certain pitch. There are "Tone Decoder" chips built specifically for this purpose.

Here is a list of assorted tone decoder chips available from Jameco Electronics.
