This page is about using "flare fitting" connectors for plumbing water or compressed air.

Introduction

A flare fitting is a type of coupling that almost as simple as
compression fitting, but makes a much stronger connection.

The fitting consists of two parts: a flare nut and a flare fitting-body. The fitting itself has fewer parts, but you need a special tool: a flaring tool to reshape the end of the metal pipe.

Unlike the compression fitting, there is no "compression nut" (ferrule) because the copper pipe is made to flare out like the end of a trumpet. The resulting metal lip is sandwiched between the nut and body.
