Compact Fluorescent Black Lights

The fluorescent lamp is the only source of black light that is both inexpensive and effective. There are now "compact fluorescent" black light lamps that screw into an ordinary fixture.

All of the ones that I have tried work well.

If you want to minimize visible light, look for compact fluorescents where the glass tube doesn't make too many sharp bends. Sometimes you get visible light leaking out where the glass is sharply bent.

When these lamps first showed up at Fry's, in the summer of 2001, they asked $19.99 for them. Rumor on the Halloween mailing list said that they were available for $10 at Home Depot, but I never found them there. This one was purchased at Fry's for $9.99 in January 2002.

This unit was purchased at Spencer's for $14.99, in the summer of 2001. It was sold in Spencer-specific packaging.

You can also find circular fluorescent black lights.
