Buying Gargoyles

For our 2002 haunt, we decided to animate some gargoyles for our graveyard fence columns. At first, we considered making our own. After considering the pain threshold of sculpting and molding our own, we decided to buy them from Distortions Unlimited.

There are several nice gargoyles available from Distortions Unlimited. They even have huge ones with wing spans of 14 feet, if you have the need ... and the bucks.

Here are some of their smaller offerings, as of August 2002...

Large 27". Foam filled latex; painted to look like stone.
These are the guys we bought for use in our modified gargoyles.

16” high hollow thin latex. This is only the latex skin. Stone finish.

16” tall. Hollow, natural latex rubber.

Our choice

We chose Distortions Unlimited model DU1136, which was selling for $90.45 (as of July 2002).

[photo] It's a large piece, 27" tall.

Normally, it is sold as a latex skin, filled with rigid plastic foam, and painted to look like stone - ready to haunt!

Since we wanted to heavily modify the gargoyles, we placed a special order for just the latex gargoyle skins: unpainted and without foam inside. Distortions was very nice about the special order, and went out of their way to get us exactly what we wanted.

[photo] This box, sides bulging, but still rather small, contains five complete gargoyle skins.

[photo] The latex gargoyle skins were shipped folded flat and bagged in plastic.

[photo] We opened the box immediately, and "fluffed up" the gargs.
