Commercial foam-carving tools

Haunters often need to carve up styrofoam. You can make your own foam tools. Or just buy them...

Wonder Cutter

[photo] This foam cutter is called "The Wonder Cutter", made by FloraCraft. We bought this one at the local "Pearl" art supply store.

Construction is spartan: a cardboard tube, some metal, and a piece of wire that heats up. It's also inexpensive; around $7 (October 2001).

Power is provided by batteries in the handle.

I have one of these, but have never tried to use it. Legend has it that the Wonder Cutter goes through batteries rapidly.

Woodland Scenics

Power is provided by a wall wart, 9VAC, 1.3A.

HotWireFoamFactory.com

The folks at
HotWireFoamFactory.com have a large selection of tools for the cutting and shaping of plastic foam. I haven't tried any of these, but they sure look helpful.

You can buy the tools separately from the power supplies. I'll concentrate on the tools. For more information, visit the web site. Make sure you check out their project gallery!

The following pictures, prices, and some text were lifted from their web site, circa May 2003.

[photo] SCULPTING TOOL - $24.95 (cat #017)

This tool stretches a piece of wire between two movable arms. With the arms atretched straight out, you get a straight 8-inch cut.

By bringing the arms closer together you can form an outward loop of hot wire for cutting into the foam for making valleys, gullies, stairwells, etc.

This cutter works with all three power supplies. When used with the Pro Power Station it works with a thicker more shapable cutting wire. Comes with 5 cutting wires.

[photo] ENGRAVING TOOL - $29.95 (cat #004)

This hand-tool has a protruding probe, but only the pointed tip heats up. This is good for engraving writing and scribing mortar lines between bricks, blocks, and stones. Makes narrow holes.

[photo] HOT KNIFE - $29.95 (cat #035)

This hand-tool has a 4" long blade is made from steel, with a round shape that slices quickly and cleanly in any direction.

Great for cutting shapes from large pieces of foam up to 3.5" thick, making holes, and much more.

Works with any Hot Wire Foam Factory Power Supply.

[photo] SUPER SCULPTING TOOL - $29.95 (cat #004)

This is a hand-held tool similar to the sculpting tool, but uses a stiffer blade and has shorter arms. While the regular sculpting tool can make outward loops, this super sculpting tool specializes in loops and other blade shapes.

You can make the blades into your favorite shapes and save them, much like having different styles of brushes for painting. Or, you can leave one blade on and keep reshaping it as needed.

Can only be used with the Pro Power Station. Comes with 5 blade wires.

[photo] HOT SCROLL TABLE - $49.95 (cat #003)

This is a 12"x14" table with a hot wire perpendicular to the surface. It works like a jigsaw, where you move the material across the table to cut accurate straight edges, strips, angles, curves, cylinders, cones. It also adjusts to make angle cuts.

Works with any Hot Wire Foam Factory Power Supply. Comes with 5 cutting blades.

Wood Burning Kit

When it comes to engraving or fine detail work, some folks swear by the use of a wood-burning kit. Commonly available at craft stores, the kit insludes an electrically-heated pencil-like device that is normally used to char the surface of a piece of wood, making pretty patterns.

The same tool can be used to melt designs into styrofoam. But you should use a lamp-dimmer to lower the heat output.

[photo] This kit from Harbor Freight Tools serves as a wood burning tool, plastic cutter, and soldering iron.

The price tag is $9.99, but I got it on sale for around $7 (Fall 2001).
