In order to achieve this effect, Rick used a fancy and expensive multichannel recorder. It enabled him to make and replay synchronized recordings for each part, akin to a choral arrangement for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass.
We set out to simulate this effect on a strict budget with our multichannel audio player 1 project. That project used a stereo recording to play a single sound track, routing it to different performing characters by using tones to turn performers on and off.
Since then, the price of MP-3 players has dropped to a pittance. This inspires us to abandon the concept of faking a multichannel recorder. Instead, we intend to use several cheap MP-3 players to give true multichannel recording. That project is multichannel audio player 2.
